"Ugly John" Mullen Takes the World Title

Turley racer caps a decade on the water — three national speed records, two national championships, and a world championship from 1974 to 1986.

The boat at full song. (period photo to come from the family)

It started on a dirt floor in Turley — a first deal written on a brown paper sack, balanced on a milk crate. What followed was a decade flat-out across open water.

By the mid-eighties the record book read like a dare answered: speed records set, national titles taken, and finally the world championship that capped the run.

  • 1974 — Turns pro on the drag-boat circuit
  • — National speed records
  • — National champion
  • — World champion
  • 1986 — Hangs it up to build the dealership
Concept F2 — Clipping wall: taped aged clippings + photos, timeline order, scrapbook feel
The record book · 1974–1986
